The Free Gift

THE FREE GIFT

Whether it be Christmas, birthdays, weddings, or anniversaries, we are all familiar with giving gifts.  In December 1987 a man named Kyle Guntharp told me about the GREATEST GIFT that was ever given.  I’d like to share this gift with you:

John 3:16 has often been called “the Heart of the Bible”.  It expresses the true meaning of giving and the GREATEST GIFT ever given.  It simply states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  This is the most often quoted, most widely known, and GREATEST verse in the Bible.  Consider its simple, yet powerful words:

GOD

The greatest! The Creator

SO LOVED

The greatest degree of the greatest emotion

THE WORLD

The greatest number

THAT HE GAVE

The greatest of all acts

HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON

The greatest gift

THAT WHOSOEVER

The greatest invitation to receive the free gift

BELIEVETH

The greatest simplicity

IN HIM

The greatest Person

SHOULD NOT PERISH

The greatest deliverance

BUT

The greatest difference

HAVE

The greatest certainty

EVERLASTING LIFE

The greatest possession

Upon the authority of Scripture, Jesus Christ was born of a virgin (Luke 1), performed unnumbered miracles to prove that He was God (John 14:10-11, John 21:25), lived a perfect (sinless) life (Hebrews 4:15), and willingly went to the cross to die for the sins of the world (John 10:17-18, 1 Peter 2:24).  There, upon the cross, Jesus died.  He was buried and three days later He rose from the dead.  Jesus was seen alive by over 500 people and then ascended into heaven to be with the Father (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).  This was how God chose to show His love for us, He sent His son, Jesus to die for our sins.  The Bible says “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

The greatness of this gift is that it is FREE to anyone who will accept it.  The simple fact is, “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  There is a payment required for our sin.  “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a).  But, God loves us (you and me) so much that He GAVE:  “But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ His son” (Romans 6:23b).  All we have to do is accept this gift and we are promised eternal life in Heaven:  “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).

Here is how I received this FREE GIFT:

I was 20 years old when Kyle shared this gift with me.  We were sitting in his truck in Anchorage, Alaska and he showed me these verses in the Bible (Romans 3:10-11, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9-10, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16 and Romans 5:8).  I knew that I was a sinner, and understood that there was a payment for my sins and that the payment was eternity in Hell.  But I was prideful at that moment and didn’t think that I needed this free gift.

I met my wife Liesl (a Christian) and we moved to Phoenix and started going to church where I once again heard of this FREE GIFT.  That evening I was reflecting on the words of the Pastor and what Kyle had shared with me a few years earlier when my wife asked me why I had not accepted the gift and again explained the Gospel to me.  That night, I wouldn’t let my pride stand in the way of my eternal destination.  I knew I was a sinner and realized I needed a Savior.  With my wife’s hand in mine I prayed and asked Jesus to be my Savior.  I put my trust in Him and His finished work on the cross.  As Romans 10:9 explains, I confessed with my mouth the Lord Jesus, I believed in my heart that God had raised Jesus from the dead and I was saved!  Saved from my sins and saved from an eternity in hell.  You too can have the peace of knowing that you are going to spend eternity in heaven.  Accept this FREE GIFT and trust in Jesus as your Savior.

It’s truly simple, I just prayed and believed saying, “Our Father in heaven, thank you for your Son Jesus.  I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.  Lord, I am sorry for my sins.  I know that I am a sinner and understand that the payment required for my sins is death.  But, Lord I also know that you loved me enough to send your Son to die for my sins.  As best as I know how, I’m putting my faith and trust in Jesus and His finished work on the cross as payment for my sins.  Thank you for this gift.  In Jesus name, Amen.”  At that moment, my life was changed forever!

My prayer is that you might do the same, trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior.  If you do, it is upon the authority of the Bible (God’s Word) that you will be saved, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

If you have trusted Jesus as your Savior and prayed a similar prayer, it would be of great encouragement to us if you would let us know.  Email us and allow us the privilege of praying for you as you embark on a Christ-filled life.  We can also help direct you to a Bible-believing church in your area and answer any questions you might have.

Finally, I beg you not to be like me and put this FREE GIFT off.  I praise God that I wasn’t killed between the time that Kyle shared the gift with me and that night a few years later with my wife.  James 4:14 explains the frailty of life stating, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

My pastor preached a funeral not long ago where he explained what the deceased man would say if he were to come back from the dead.  I know in my heart’s heart that he’d want you to trust Jesus as your Savior today.  Don’t wait and let tomorrow be too late.

Pastor Jake DeField
